After just a few days working on the latest prototype and I've completely switched plans again. Rather than a ball with so much internal structure, maybe rounding off an icosahedron might be a better choice.

Using 30 of the short struts from my geodesic dome, I made an icosahedron that is just a bit bigger than I'd be able to move through my newly made fence/gates.

Building within the metal icosa helped quite a bit both in knowing exactly which direction the struts should angle and as a scaffolding.

My cleverest idea so far-use a pair of C-Clamps (with the tightening bar removed) as axles for the globe.
