Burningman 2006:

Intelligent Design

Progress

Plodding toward the goal. The images are roughly in time order. You'll notice that I'm jumping from one to the next critter as I go.

I got a couple of kinks in Paully's leg and used balloons to force it out into shape.

Inflating balloons to the right size was a pain, so I re-invented the catheter (used in many heart operations) using a plastic tube with a balloon on the end. Push it into the right area and blow on the far end to reinflated kinked regions.

Getting ready to fill Paully's legs with plaster. I attached supports to keep the legs from splaying out when I add a whole bunch of weight.

The dog gets a new coat of bondo.

Balloons are useful in pushing outward.

The dogs feet get coated with bondo.

Back to Paully and several pours of plaster later. I filled the legs up a bit beyond the knees and used plaster soaked terry cloth towels to support the butt and hips.

A patch to the leg where it kinked a little.

First coats of bondo to the outside surface of his legs.

Building the tree for the Orang to sit on.

med | big | huge

Texturing the branch. This is a good place to spread batches of bondo that are curing WAY too fast. When they start going off, I spread the mix quickly and keep using the brush to give texture until it sets enough to stop flowing smoothly.

Since I want Paully to be a self supporting tripod, I built an armature from the waist to the arm of wood and re-slit the arm to insert it. I hope to tie it into the legs though I haven't figured that part out yet...

About to add more expanding foam to the torso.

med | big | huge

Inserting a couple empty but well capped 2 litre Dr. Pepper bottles to take up some volume.

med | big | huge

What a gooey mess this stuff is!

med | big | huge

med | big | huge

Looking into the torso after a couple cans of expanding foam have been added to fill the strong arm. head and some of the chest.

More rain??? Why is it raining in California in late April??

med | big | huge

A balloon keeping the neck circular while I cover it with bondo between rain showers.

med | big | huge

The Orang gets to sit on his tree for the first bondo coats.

med | big | huge

The dog get a head.

med | big | huge

I'm kinda afraid that some idiot will try to ride the dog, so he's getting extra strength with some fiberglass cloth.

med | big | huge

Rains done (?) and the tarps finally come down.

med | big | huge

Time to start building the Ramp!! Since the ground here isn't a flat and level as the playa, I started by leveling up a work 'bench'.

med | big | huge

Makin' it up as I go. What looks right?

Completed ramp in two 8' sections. (Figured out later that I'll need to build another 2' section or so. The critters are just a little bigger than I estimated.)

med | big | huge

Some local residents start to occupy their new home.

When I put foam into the head, I didn't leave enough expansion room or air space. 2 weeks later, much of the liquid still hadn't hardened. (not enough air.) Poking a few holes in his head helped relieve the pressure.

med | big | huge

Another too hot batch of bondo to add to the textured tree trunk.

med | big | huge

The Orang off his tree and with at least one coat of bondo overall.

med | big | huge

To toughen up the tree, I added a layer of plaster coated towels inside.

med | big | huge

The base of the tree and the wooden plug I hope to use to secure it to the ramp.

med | big | huge

I added some clay to make make the face a bit more orang-like.
