Building the trophies for the Mavericks surf competition for 2015; variations on Cruz the Wave burning man 2014 project.
The beginning: Cruz the Wave
For burning man 2014, I was working with a group of burners (people who go to Burning Man) to make a project to take to Burning Man to represent Santa Cruz. Several people came up with the idea of a surf wave. I made a physical model of what I thought it should look like, and it was that model that was the basis of the project. It turned into a huge undertaking; 18' tall, 80' long, and 32' wide. It took a Peterbuilt tractor towing a 45' trailer and a big pickup towing a 16' car hauler trailer to get the materials out to Nevada.
After the event, I started working with a company called Cartel-Management to build trophies for the Titan's Of Mavericks Surf competition for 2015. The pages that follow show some of the steps along the way.
A nicely lit shot from Brenda. I think this may have been the image that Griffin or Brian saw that prompted them contacting me to make trophies back around may-June 2014
Because the Titans of Mavericks logo and branding uses a deep navy blue, I painted one of the Cruz the Wave models black and then oversprayed with Navy Blue.
