Building it: The Leg Forms

I'm building both a small plastic model of Skypad apartments, and the concrete forms for the legs of the full scale version.

Simple tools-a compass, straight edge and pencil are all that are needed to mark out the spool sides. A ruler helps, but isn't required.

A close up of my 2 radii length compass - 3.5' and 4'.

This pic shows the first step in the construction of one of the 30 'Pringles' that it will take to make the entire project.

After measuring the distance-46.5", the squre is used to draw a 90 degree line.

Boards all cut. Time to start wedging the spool end into the jig.

It fits tightly into the jig so the final pringles are all exactly the same.

Boards are laid in place. 2x6"s for the two outer ends and 2x4"s for the 5 positions between. Overbuilt perhaps, but I want it climbable.

The glue is what is going to make this strong. The screws that follow are just "permanant" clamps to keep the glue sqeezed together until hardened.

The last of the screws is added to the first spool end.

Glue is put on the ends of all the boards at the other end of the spool.

The other spool end is placed in the jig. It needs to be manually fitted. Getting a little of that nasty glue on my fingers.

The opposite spool end is held tightly keeping it all aligned. This spool end will move into place as the screws are tightened.

As soon as all the steps above are complete, I lift it out of the jig and move it just a couple inches away to stay aligned while it drys. (I'm afraid to let it dry in the jig lest it get stuck and mess up the great jig.)

Total time to compete: about 15 minutes.

After a while (a couple hours if I have other things to do) I stack the pringle with the others.

med | big | huge

Now does it make sense why I call them pringles?

Miscellaneous art in the way. This is my 7 year old on-going gooey paint brush tree.

One more pringle. Now I have 6 - enough for the first full ring.
