Obfuscation: da Vinci 2

Leonardo da Vinci knew how to think for himself. He performed secret human dissections to further his knowledge about anatomy and to make himself a better artist. Da Vinci was into knowledge. He was into thinking.

The internet is opening up new sources of information to anyone with access to a computer. That scares the hell out of people that are afraid that you may think for yourself. The hottest topic for these people today is the presence of pornography on the internet. It will rot the brains of our youth and destroy our society. Pornography is the excuse they use to obscure their true ends. Their real agenda is to protect YOU from ideas that THEY find offensive.

Graphical sexual pictures have been around since the invention of clothing as a device to hide nakedness.I've seen graphic, if not quite as vivid, sexual poses carved on public buildings in Kathmandu. The glorious but naked bodies on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel mostly survived those that tried to requre the additon of appropriately place fig leaves. Many masterpieces did not.

I know how to find the nasty internet pictures that some find so offensive. I don't care to seek them out, and you really do have to delibeately seek out such images contrary to the way it is sometimes portrayed.

"But we have to protect the children!" they cry.

It is my contention that parents have two choices in trying to protect their children. Choice one is to build a shell around their children, through which no offensive influences can pass. Choice two is to give their children the armor that they can use to fend off such influences when they conflict with the values they have been taught.

My parents picked the latter path, allowing and even encouraging me to encounter input that was counter to the values they had imparted to me. I remember my dad sneaking me in to a topless review in Las Vegas when I was 16. After the first few minutes of wide-eyed amazement over all the bouncing breasts, I quickly began seeing a well staged show and not a sexual orgy. This first exposure to nearly naked women was presented in a healthy context with a sense that there is a time and place for everything in moderation.

Beware those who feel the need to protect you from thinking for yourself.
